A Letter from Johan

My mother loved the Swedish expression “sätta guldkant på tillvaron.” I inherited that love from her, and it became part of the inspiration for The Dapper Swede.

Literally, it means “put a gilded rim on existence,” although that translation misses much of its warmth. It is the idea of adding something special to everyday life simply because you can. Setting the table beautifully for dinner at home. Opening the good bottle of wine without an occasion. Bringing flowers into a room. Lighting candles with breakfast. Or sharing an indulgent treat on a regular Tuesday.

I grew up believing we can make life richer by noticing and celebrating small everyday moments, though I didn't fully understand how much that belief had shaped me until much later.

I spent much of my career in the world of luxury, surrounded by extraordinary craftsmanship, beautiful objects, remarkable environments and people with tremendous knowledge. I learned enormously from those years. But perhaps the most lasting lesson was that luxury isn't defined by price or rarity alone. Its real value is in what it adds to an experience.

I also believe in the power of curiosity. I believe curiosity leads to exploration. Exploration leads to learning and knowledge. And knowledge deepens appreciation, creating richer experiences.

A beautiful object becomes more meaningful when you understand the creativity and craftsmanship behind it. A beautifully set table invites people to gather, focus on the moment, and make room for the conversations that matter. And something rare and unfamiliar can go from feeling exclusionary to something understood and appreciated.

The Dapper Swede grew slowly from these ideas.

For years, I found myself returning to the same subjects: beauty, craftsmanship, entertaining, creativity, curiosity, and the pleasure and appreciation that come from learning. It didn’t start with a grand plan to create a business. The pieces accumulated gradually, through experiences, conversations, travels, dinners, and things I wanted to share.

Then, during our Christmas trip home to Sweden in 2025, the first time since my teenage years that all the siblings had celebrated Christmas together, those pieces finally came together.

I began thinking about caviar, my love for it, its power to make people feel special and moments feel luxurious, yet how unnecessarily intimidating it can seem from the outside. There's etiquette, terminology, tradition, and an aura of exclusivity around it. Yet at its heart, caviar is wonderfully simple. Open a tin, gather a few people you like, and share it.

That Christmas, I decided it was time to create The Dapper Swede Caviar.

Caviar is where I am beginning, but the idea behind The Dapper Swede has been forming for much longer. I want to share what I love, why I have curated it, and perhaps introduce you to things you haven't discovered yet. Some will be exceptional. Others may be wonderfully ordinary.

Most of all, I hope The Dapper Swede occasionally inspires you to sätta guldkant på tillvaron in your own way. Or, as I now call it, “Romancing the Ordinary!”
